Battle of the Brands | Round One

Battle of the Brands | Round One

Welcome to The Battle of the Brands: Where Marketing Meets the Real World

Marketing is a battle for attention. Winning it is one thing, keeping it is another. That’s why we created Battle of the Brands to cut through the marketing noise and see who’s actually winning the battle for attention. Some brands turn awareness into action. Others just burn budget. This is where we separate the two. It’s not about who spends the most or shouts the loudest. It’s about who understands the real game: Creating attention that converts into action. So we’re giving that action a stage.

In every edition, we showcase real marketing battles across industries: Who’s leading, who’s losing, and what it takes to win. Powered by our DCMN Brand Tracker, which tracks 400 real consumers in Germany every month in 20 categories – giving us one of the most comprehensive views of brand performance in the market. We break down awareness, usage, and actual impact. So brands can stop guessing and start winning.

Our first edition dives into financial services. And Round One? It’s all about the crypto heavyweights: Etoro vs. Bitpanda vs. Coinbase

Battle of the Brands: The Ultimate Finance Showdown

Again, welcome to the Battle of the Brands, where egos are big, budgets are bigger, and only the strongest survive. This isn’t some polite industry seminar; it’s a brutal, all-out slugfest for consumer attention in financial services. The contenders? Who took the hardest hits? Who landed the biggest punches? And who, after a couple of grueling rounds, is still standing tall? Grab your popcorn. This fight is about to get ugly.

Round One | The Crypto Heavyweights

Battle of the Brands: Etoro vs. Bitpanda vs. Coinbase

Etoro: The Early Contender

Etoro came out swinging with 25% brand awareness in January, riding high on its reputation. But the crypto market is unforgiving, by October, awareness had plunged to 14%, only to recover to 24% in December. What happened?

It wasn’t for lack of effort. The AI-powered Be the Investor You Want to Be campaign aired during the Paris 2024 Olympics, ensuring high visibility. But awareness alone doesn’t win battles, engagement matters. That’s where Etoro faltered.

Brand Usage rates stagnated at an average of 3%, while brand consideration fluctuated between 7% and 10% throughout the year, showing that while awareness was high, deeper consumer interest remained inconsistent.

And despite spending €2.17 million on advertising, with a focus on search (41.4%) and social media (37.0%), Etoro struggled to convert that awareness into real customer action (Nielsen Media Research, 2024).

Bitpanda: Slow and Steady Growth in Round One

Bitpanda took a different approach: Playing the long game. Awareness started at 10% in January but steadily climbed to 22% by year-end. But more importantly? Usage followed.

From a humble 2%, Bitpanda’s brand usage doubled to 4% by mid-year, proving it’s not just a brand people recognise—it’s a platform they actually use. It briefly overtook Coinbase in November before dipping again in December, but the overall trend was clear: steady growth throughout the year. Playing the long game paid off.

Establishing Good Partnerships

  • Bitpanda became the official Crypto Partner of FC Bayern München. Football sponsorships always work well in Germany, because football is Germany.
  • A multi-market deal with DAZN in 2024 helped push Bitpanda’s brand across Europe, solidifying its mainstream appeal.
  • In April 2024, Bitpanda partnered with Germany’s largest federal bank, Landesbank Baden-Württemberg (LBBW), bringing legitimacy and trust to its platform.
  • By the end of 2024, Bitpanda hit six million users and secured MiCAR licences from both Germany’s BaFin and Malta’s MFSA, allowing operations across all 27 EU countries.

Unlike Etoro, Bitpanda invested heavily in traditional media, spending €27.6 million, with the majority going into TV (38.9%) (Nielsen Media Research, 2024). That paid off! Not just in awareness but in actual usage. Additionally, billboards (5.0%) accounted for €1.39M, reinforcing its presence in high-traffic public spaces. This mix of TV dominance and strategic OOH (out-of-home) investments ensured Bitpanda wasn’t just visible, it was unavoidable!

Also Bitpanda’s brand consideration was volatile, dropping as low as 4% in October but rebounding to 8% in December, signalling that while the brand made steady gains, it had to fight to maintain top-of-mind relevance.

Coinbase: The Silent Assassin

Coinbase played a deliberate, calculated game. It entered the awareness race late, registering at 17% in May. But when it moved, it moved smart.

Its “Bitcoin Halving Campaign” in April was nothing short of genius, pushing awareness to a peak of 19% by year’s end. The campaign capitalised on a critical moment in the crypto world, ensuring Coinbase was top-of-mind when it mattered most.

But usage? That’s where things got shaky. Despite strong awareness, brans usage hovered between 3-6%, proving that while people recognised Coinbase, not enough were actively trading.

Coinbase took a minimalist approach to advertising, spending just €1,089 on mobile advertising – an almost non-existent investment compared to its competitors (Nielsen Media Research, 2024). The takeaway? It relied heavily on organic growth and market momentum rather than aggressive marketing campaigns.

Round One of Battle of the Brands goes to Bitpanda: Because Brand Awareness is Nothing Without Conversion

Bitpanda didn’t just get seen – it got used! The numbers prove it: steady awareness growth, increasing user engagement, and strategic partnerships that brought credibility and mass-market appeal.

The takeaway? Hype is fleeting. Consistency wins battles.
